I just talked with Mike Hudzinski and he is currently in the ER at Duke Hospital with a broken femur. Apparently he slipped on ice today and had to be transported via ambulance. I don’t have too many details to share but he has asked for prayers from all his NHS friends and classmates.

Mike, it’s really bad that you threw you shirt on the ice and it’s even worse that you were in the shirt at the time. Maybe it’s time to become a snowbird. Speedy repair and get well soon.

Thank you all so much for such heartfelt wishes. I slipped on ice crossing the driveway. I had crossed at several times before yesterday and had no issues. I guess I pushed my luck. Anyway when I slipped it was kind of like a jerking motion. My ankle turned to the left and my leg turned right. I heard the need break. It sounded like a broken tree branch. So I lay on the ice no cell phone, I’d all I could do was just lay there and yell for help. Kathy didn’t know I was out there. Luckily for me my neighbor came out on his back porch to get some firewood for his fireplace and heard me. He came down to help me and gave me his phone and I called 911. I live in Orange County out near the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department Zone. About 10 minutes later they started showing up. In the end there was about 10 or 12 of them and an ambulance. They actually because my driveway was so slick with ice from the previous storm they could not bring the gurney up to me. I had to go to it. To get there they put me on the board then put the board on a tarp and pull me down to the road all 180 ft like I was a tarp of leaves in the fall. It was then they were able to put me on the put me in the ambulance. I am a Vietnam veteran of course and I asked to go to the VA Hospital but the VA cannot handle my particular break so I never went there I ended up across the street at Duke ER. And then was taking for a CAT scan. Turns out I have fractured my femur in three places. I had surgery this morning between 7:00 and 12:00 p.m.. I was high as a Georgia Pine when I went to recovery from all the painkillers they had given me but thankfully all that wore off mid-afternoon. They had to put a rod inside the femur all the way from my knee up to my hip. It’s about 12 to 13 inches long I would guess. The good news is the VA is picking up the bill. I guess a year in the jungles of Vietnam it’s finally pay it off in a roundabout way. I will probably go to physical therapy tomorrow and get the process started. I just wanted y’all to know where I was at on this and no use leaving you hanging. And you can take my advice don’t go out unless you have Spike shoes on. Lol!
Hud! Sorry to hear about your troubles!! Thoughts and prayers for your quick recovery!!! Larry C.
